Jasprit Bumrah – Indian pacer Akash Deep was ruled out of the Sydney Test due to a back niggle, with Prasidh Krishna replacing him in the squad. Deep, who played two Tests during the tour of Australia, bowled 77.5 overs in the Gabba and Melbourne Tests, taking five wickets at an average of 54. Despite his consistent efforts, he was deemed unlucky not to secure more wickets.
The 28-year-old pacer has played seven Tests since replacing Mukesh Kumar in the squad, claiming 15 wickets at an average of 35.20. However, he is yet to achieve a four- or five-wicket haul in his career and is yet to debut in T20Is and ODIs. Due to his injury, Akash Deep will also miss Bengal’s knockout clashes in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25, including the encounter against Haryana on January 9 in Vadodara. The BCCI medical team has not yet disclosed the full extent of his injury.
Jasprit Bumrah’s Injury Update
Jasprit Bumrah was ruled out of bowling in the fourth innings of the Sydney Test due to a back spasm. The extent of his injury remains unclear as he prepares for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. 2020–2022: Test Debut in India and T20 World Cup
In December 2020, Jasprit Bumrah was named in the ICC Men’s T20I Team of the Decade. He missed the final Test of the 2020 Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the Gabba due to an abdominal strain sustained during the Sydney Test, where he also faced racist abuse from the crowd. Cricket Australia issued an apology after India filed a formal complaint. India won the series, with Bumrah finishing as the fifth-highest wicket-taker, claiming 11 wickets.
Bumrah played his maiden Test on home soil in February 2021 against England at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium, where Daniel Lawrence became his first Test wicket in India. He was part of India’s squad for the ICC World Test Championship Final against New Zealand, going wicketless in the match India lost.
In the 2021 England series, Bumrah was the highest wicket-taker with 23 wickets and shared the Player of the Series award with Joe Root. During the postponed final Test in July 2022, Bumrah captained India and set a record by scoring 29 runs off a Stuart Broad over, surpassing Brian Lara’s record of 28 runs.
Bumrah participated in the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, but India failed to reach the semi-finals. In February 2022, Bumrah was named vice-captain for the series against Sri Lanka, where he claimed his maiden five-wicket haul in a home Test. 2023–Present: Injury Comeback and ICC Tournament Success
Bumrah missed most of early 2023 due to a back injury and underwent surgery in March. After a year-long absence, he returned in August as captain for the Ireland series and won Player of the Series. He was instrumental in India’s 2023 Asia Cup triumph, taking four wickets with an economy rate of 4.17.
In the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup, Bumrah took 20 wickets, including a four-wicket haul against Afghanistan. India reached the final but lost to Australia. Bumrah became the fastest Indian pacer to reach 150 Test wickets during England’s 2024 tour of India and achieved career-best Test figures of 6/45. He became the first Indian pacer to achieve the number-one ICC Test ranking and topped all three formats.
In June 2024, Bumrah played a pivotal role in India’s T20 World Cup win, finishing as the second-highest wicket-taker with 15 wickets and earning Player of the Tournament honors.
By September, he reached 400 international wickets and became the ICC’s top-ranked bowler in December. During the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Bumrah became the fastest Indian pacer to reach 200 Test wickets, maintaining the best average among bowlers with 200 wickets.
