Excitement for SA20 Season – Paarl Royals captain David Miller shared his enthusiasm ahead of the third season of SA20, which begins on January 9 with an exciting opener between Sunrisers Eastern Cape and MI Cape Town at St George’s Park, Gqeberha. The Royals will kick off their campaign on January 11 against defending champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape.
A Blend of Experience and Youth
Speaking during the SA20 Captains’ Day event, Miller emphasized the importance of having a mix of seasoned players and young talent. “We’re looking forward to this year with those particularly experienced players,” he stated.
Joe Root’s All-Round Influence
Miller highlighted the addition of England’s Joe Root, praising the former Test captain’s impact both on and off the field. “Joe Root adds a lot more than just success on the field. He brings solidity to the squad, which is essential, especially in our home conditions,” Miller remarked. He also acknowledged Root as one of the greatest batters in the world, despite the format difference.
Beyond cricketing skills, Miller appreciated Root’s personality and mentorship qualities. “As a person, he contributes a lot off the field, especially with the youngsters. His passion for the game and experience can significantly help in the growth of the team.”
Admiration for Dinesh Karthik
Miller expressed similar admiration for Indian veteran Dinesh Karthik, who joined the franchise for the third season. “Dinesh Karthik has a wealth of experience and is extremely passionate about the game. He brings a lot to the team,” Miller said.
Reflecting on their past association, Miller added, “It’s great to be playing with him again after 12 or 13 years since our time at Kings XI Punjab. He’s an ambassador of the game and a great character who can share invaluable knowledge from his 20-year career.”
A Promising Squad
The Royals boast a dynamic squad combining seasoned stars like Root, Karthik, and Lungi Ngidi with emerging talent. Despite the challenge of selecting a balanced playing XI with only four overseas players allowed per match, Miller is optimistic about the team’s prospects. “We’ve got a really young team this year, which is exciting,” he concluded.
