RCB’s Big Gamble on Jacob Bethell
During the IPL 2025 auction, the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) made a bold move by acquiring 21-year-old England allrounder Jacob Bethell for INR 2.6 crores. The decision raised eyebrows, especially after Bethell’s disappointing form in the ongoing Big Bash League (BBL) 2024-25.
Struggles in the Big Bash League
Bethell had struggled with both bat and ball in the BBL, having scored only 103 runs from 7 matches for Melbourne Renegades and taking just two wickets with his left-arm spin. Critics began questioning whether RCB had made the right choice investing heavily in the Guyanese-born youngster.
A Stunning Turnaround
However, Bethell silenced his critics with a match-changing performance in Tuesday’s BBL clash against Hobart Hurricanes. After Renegades were reduced to 69/4 in the 12th over, Bethell took charge, contributing a stunning 87 off 50 balls. He added 41 runs off 31 balls for the fifth wicket with Renegades captain Will Sutherland, taking the team past the 100-mark.
Bethell’s Heroics
After Sutherland’s dismissal in the 17th over, Bethell continued his assault, hitting three sixes and two boundaries in the last three overs, guiding Renegades to a total of 154/7 in 20 overs. His innings included eight boundaries and four sixes. Additionally, Bethell contributed with the ball, taking the wicket of Hurricanes’ Charlie Wakim.
A Vital Test Ahead
Although Renegades and Hurricanes are in a similar position at 69/4, Bethell’s performance was a sign of his potential. To earn a spot in RCB’s playing XI in IPL 2025, Bethell will need more performances like this one, especially if he wants to edge out experienced players like Krunal Pandya.
