Virat Kohli’s Poor Form and Player Availability Policies Discussed in BCCI Review Meeting – Virat Kohli’s recent struggles with the bat were among the key topics discussed during a BCCI review meeting held in Mumbai on Saturday. The meeting, which followed India’s disappointing Border-Gavaskar Trophy campaign, saw the attendance of India’s captain Rohit Sharma, head coach Gautam Gambhir, chief selector Ajit Agarkar, and top BCCI officials. The discussions primarily focused on analyzing India’s performance in Australia, what went wrong, and how to make improvements moving forward.
Kohli has faced heavy criticism for his underwhelming performances in the series against New Zealand and Australia. After managing only 93 runs in six innings at an average of 15.50 against New Zealand, Kohli was expected to silence his critics during the Australian tour, a place where he has previously scored seven Test centuries. However, except for a hundred in Perth during the first Test, Kohli only managed 90 runs in the entire series. Moreover, the former captain fell victim to deliveries outside the off-stump a staggering eight times in his nine innings in Australia.
According to a report in Hindustan Times, Kohli’s form was thoroughly discussed in the meeting, and his inclusion in India’s upcoming Test tour of England depends largely on how Shubman Gill performs leading up to it. India is set to begin their next World Test Championship cycle with a five-Test series in England, scheduled for late June.
“The selectors will likely wait before forming an opinion, given that the England tour is still five months away. Shubman Gill has not yet settled into the role Kohli once occupied. He is far from the ready replacement Kohli was when Sachin Tendulkar retired. This will certainly be a factor for Agarkar’s selection committee,” the report noted.
Gill’s recent performances in Australia also raise concerns. In five innings, he scored just 93 runs at an average of 18.60, without a half-century. Since his memorable Gabba performance in the 2020/21 series, Gill’s batting form outside Asia has been scrutinized, with just 233 runs in 14 innings at an average of 17.92.
BCCI to Tighten Player Availability Policies
The review meeting also addressed the growing trend of senior players opting out of bilateral series. The BCCI has made it clear that players will no longer be allowed to skip these series at their discretion. Moving forward, any player wishing to miss a bilateral series must provide valid medical reasons for their absence. This decision aims to ensure that players are committed to representing India in every series, barring exceptional circumstances.
